Scribbler

Scribbler is a writing app with a clear and minimalist interface. It is easy to use even if you are new to the digital world.

The idea
As a writer myself, I always wished I had a place where I could write down ideas or verses as soon as they cross my mind. The easiest way was to type them on a cell phone, but all the apps I found were too complicated and full of distractions.
Problem

Defining the problem

There are a lot of writing apps, but most writing apps have complicated markdown editors, dictionaries that pops up, notifications, and lots of unused features and cluttered interfaces which make them annoying, so writers usually give up and go back to paper or a computer.

Goal

I wanted to create a writing app with the absolute minimal interface, suitable even for people who are not prone to the digital world and prefer the feel of paper. The user interface had to be super easy and accessible for users with different levels of tech-literacy.

Design process

From wireframes to finals

I first defined the key screen and necessary parts of a markdown editor, and then moved forward to the homepage and profile screen. I wanted to make the app suitable for writers who don't write only prose or poetry, but different genres of text so they can organise their writings with ease. The app allows users to create folders and add text to them.

Adding details

When the layout was done, I worked on the visual design of the app. I developed a rule based system to support branding, typography, illustration and colors in order to achieve visual consistency with the styling of the app. The system served as a base for the entire user interface used on iOS, Android devices, desktop and the website.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Bottom line

With a huge amount of apps available, a successful app cannot only be nice looking and clean. More important is to make the app simple and easy to use, in order to engage the user from the very beginning and let them interact according to their personal preferences.
